Glen Grant 1960 Gordan & MacPhail 700mL 40% ABV

Another of Gordon & Macphail's long-aged Glen Grants which, along with Glenfarclas, represent the best-value long-aged sherried Speysides available. Thankfully, Glen Grant is one of those special Speysiders (like Glenfarclas and Macallan) that is capable of withstanding immense oak ageing without tasting like a pile of wet sawdust! Since 1895, Gordan & MacPhail has worked with the majority of Scotland's distilleries and today, matures, selects and bottles some of the world's finest and rarest Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. Casks owned by Gordon & MacPhail are sent to distilleries throughout Scotland and filled with 'new-make' spirit, before being left to mature at the distillery or in their warehouses in Elgin. Relationships with distillery owners enables Gordon & MacPhail to bottle a special range of whiskies at various strengths and ages - each with their own distinctive distillery label.

Notes from Certificate of Origin

"On the instruction of my father, cask 5041 was filled with new make spirit distilled at the Glen Grant distillery on 24th October 1960. It was left to quietly mature at the distillery for many years before being transferred to Gordon and MacPhail's bonded warehoused in Elgin in 1968. there the cask lay until the decision was finally taken to bottle this Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky on 20th September 2009. Thank you for purchasing this 1960 vintage from the Glen Grant Distillery. I hope you enjoy this rare and special piece of Scotland's liquid history." Michael Urquhart, Director

Tasting Notes

Praise for Glen Grant 1960 Gordan & MacPhail

Oh my word! Spices with mufflers attached, oloroso with a few brush strokes of prune juice and molasses. And for all the obvious Spanish influence, we have echoes of Kentucky with liquorice and honey in delicate proportions and pastel shades; the oak makes an early impact, as you might expect. But that is soon buried under layers of melt-in-the-mouth fruit, then a more bitter burnt raisin; fabulously long. And the most extraordinary bisection of an ancient, slightly overcooked fruitcake. Which consisted of about 76% raisin; the kind of nose which makes it difficult to get to the next stage. But when you make that next, tentative step, you are so glad you did! Just about perfect oloroso, which alone these days makes this a national treasure.
