Kangarilla Road Scarce Earth Project Shiraz 750mL

Country: Australia Year: 2011 Varietal(s): Shiraz ABV: 14.9% Terroir: McLaren Vale MyBottleShop Notes: Winemaker Kevin O'Brien and viticulturists Fiona Wood and Neil Kildare have produced just 6,000 bottles of the Kangarilla Road Scarce Earth Project Shiraz 2011. The McLaren Vale Scarce Earth Project is a unique celebration of the region's best shiraz vineyards, and the Maslin Beach vineyard is one of the best, as evidenced by this rich red intertwined with the complexity of oak and mineralality. Vineyards and Winemaking: Harvested 15 March 2011 from north-facing vines planted in 1998 at an elevation of 24 meters. North to south row orientation at the Maslin Beach vineyard (Kildare block). Blanche Point Formation soil that is rich in marine fossil calcareous siltstone and limestone. Drip irrigated. Open fermentation, 14 days on skins and maturation in American oak (21% new, 14% 2-year-old, 65% 3-year-old). Bottled 25 March 2013. Tasting Notes: A deep red shiraz with purple and blue hues. On the nose it is rich in chocolate, forest berries and earthy notes. The palate is fascinating, beginning with rich berry fruits and oak that leads to subtle minerality and iodine. Cellaring: The perfect shiraz to enjoy now, or cellar between 2016 and 2036 .

Kangarilla Road Scarce Earth Project Shiraz 2011 750mL 14.9% ABV

The McLaren Vale Scarce Earth Project is a unique endeavour that was originally launched to celebrate McLaren Vale's best shiraz vineyards. Each of the subsequent wines to be released have enjoyed their own unique identity, and this 2011 vintage is no different. In fact, it even went through a series of three separate tasting panels to ensure the wine was in line with Kangarilla Road's minimal winemaking intervention methods.

Tasting Notes

Colour & Appearance: Deep red with dark purple/blue hues. Nose: Chocolate, rich forest berries and earthy notes are detectable. Integrated oak gives the wine a well-structured aroma. Palate: Fascinating flavours that represent the merits of this premium wine-growing region. Subtle minerality and iodine notes are hidden within the rich berry fruit palate. Earthy hints mingle with chocolate notes. Finish: A ling smooth finish that lingers with thick tannins and hints of chocolate and oak. Awards and Praise: "A bouquet of dusty earth and pepper/spice savoury aromas, with chocolate and cedar. Full-bodied and solid, tannic and robust, with a big, firm finish that rolls on and on. This is a whopper, with a fruit-sweet core wrapped in dense tannins." 95 points, Huon Hooke, Decanter (NOV/2013) "There is simply more of everything in this wine; strong aromas of mocha, fruitcake spice, prunes and black fruits are all on display; with black fruits in abundance and a lingering mocha note on the long unevolved finish." Rating 94 - Drink to 2022 James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion.
