The Pulteney Distillery in Wick is the most northerly distillery on the Scottish Mainland. Matured in fine oak casks, quietly breathing in the fresh sea air, Old Pulteney is the very essence of this unique place.  Established in the port of Wick in 1826, this fine single malt is steeped in seafaring history. Back then, the windswept distillery was only accessible by sea and as one of the busiest herring ports in the world, many of the distillery workers were also hardy fishermen. Today, Old Pulteney Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is created using the same traditional methods of the 1800s.  The copper wash still, in particular, is a source of fascination to visitors due to the absence of a 'swan neck'.  Legend has it, that when the still was delivered, it was too tall for the still house and the manager simply cut the top off!  This shape, known as the "smuggler's kettle", contributes to the distinctive style of the whisky.  It has also influenced the unique shape of the bottle. Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky Aged 17 Years predominantly features ex-bourbon maturation, with the addition of spirit that has been wholly matured in Spanish wood ex-sherry casks, predominantly Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso. This adds a subtle depth and complexity to the whisky, making for an outstanding after-dinner drink. A just right 46% ABV, 700mL.
