Weissenoher Klosterbrauerei

Weissenoher Klosterbrauerei

Weissenoher Klosterbrauerei - The Benedictine Monastery in Weißenohe was founded around 1050 and it is believed to have started brewing beer at that time – making it one of the oldest Monastic Breweries in Germany and the oldest in northern Bavaria. “Gerstensaft” (barley juice), as it was known at the time, was a great source of sustenance for the Monks during fasting periods and was also much loved by the population as a staple food or “flüssiges Brot” (liquid bread) – with add-on benefit of course!

The land on which it has resided since 1109AD is off the beaten track in the backwoods of Bavarian Franconia. The location is ideal because the locally-grown barley is of just the right quality for brewing and is malted in local malthouses. The two neighbouring villages still cultivate the Hersbrucker Hops whose aroma is essential in lending that elegant touch of bitterness to the Weißenoher Bier Specialities. Water purity is essential to beer quality and the Weißenoher Klosterbrauerei is still drawing its supply from the same natural springs as in the early days of the Monastery
