Hartog's Plate

Hartog's Plate are Western Australian wines have been named in honour of Dirk Hartog, the first European to sight Western Australia. On 26 October 1616, he landed at Cape Inscription where he left behind a flattened pewter dinner plate, nailed to an oak post and placed on the cliff top. 81 years later, Dutchman Willem de Vlamingh also reached the island and discovered Hartog’s pewter plate, which he removed and took back to the Netherlands, where it is still kept in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

Hartog’s Plate remains the oldest known artefact of European exploration of Australia.
