Bundaberg Rum 1960s John Cawsey and Stephen King Bottle 26Fl Oz

Bundaberg Rum 1960s John Cawsey and Stephen King Bottle 26Fl Oz - This super rare and original 1960s bottle of Bundaberg Rum is a collector's dream. It is the original Sam McMahon bottle design with Bundy Bear #1 design and designed by Sam (Prime Minister Billy McMahon's brother). The bottle would date between 1961 and 1968, since many of the late 1960s bottles were bottled in Bundaberg by the Sugar company.

The bottle is a little sun-faded and the bottom part of the click seal is moving about but we have had the bottle checked out and the seal is intact. The level is very good due to the tight seal. Stephen King Pty Ltd in Melbourne was eventually absorbed into John Cawsey and Co. making this such a rare bottle - the Stephen King bottle is very rarely seen or even mentioned in the archives. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own an important piece of Bundaberg Rum's history.

Bundaberg Rum 1960s John Cawsey and Stephen King Bottle 26Fl Oz

In 1961, Sam McMahon (brother of Former Australian Prime Minister Billy McMahon), designed the Bundaberg Rum Bottle and put its iconic Bear on the label. While many people scratch their heads over why a polar bear is the marketing symbol for rum produced in tropical Queensland, the answer is simple, McMahon means Son of a Bear in Irish, and Sam's favourite bear was the polar bear. Looking for an image to compete with the walking man; and the bat device, choosing a bear to represent Bundaberg Rum was a symbol that effectively put him on every label. It also helped him to sell Bundy Rum in southern states with the slogan Ward off the wickedest of chills.

Prior to 1974, BDC did not bottle their own product. Bundaberg Rum was wholesaled to over 90 different companies who bottled Bundaberg Rum under their own brand. In the 1960’s BDC decided to take some control of their name and encouraged bottlers to use “This is Famous Bundaberg Rum” on their labels, by paying for part of the label printing costs.
