Old Grand-Dad 100 Proof is a bottled in bond, high rye mash bill Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Rated 94.5 by Jim Murray's Whisky Bible - higher than Pappy Van Winkle!!

A terrific old-style spirit that has paved the way for the new "hand-crafted" brands. Produced by Beam Kentucky, the Grand Dad they are referring to is none other than Basil Hayden!

Old Grand-Dad 100 Proof 750mL 50% ABV USA

Old Grand-Dad 114 is part of a larger Old Grand-Dad brand that was created in 1840’s by Raymond Haden. Old Grand-Dad was a reference to his grandfather Basil Hayden Sr (who was well known for his own whiskey!) Basil was a distiller himself before when he moved with the family from Maryland to Kentucky in the 1780’s. Raymond Haden started a distillery on the family farm in 1790’s and the distillery was eventually sold in 1899. The distillery was closed for good during prohibition and the brand changed hands again to National Distillers Group who then sold it in 1987 to Fortune Brands, which became Beam. Mr. Hayden was well known for favouring more rye in his bourbon mash bill than was common (even today). While we don’t know the exact percentage of rye, it’s up there. This is very evident on its nose. Fainter hints of orange peel and spice also tag along for the ride! Firm, Full Bodied, Grandfather-Approved! Even James Bond loved a drop of Old Grand-dad - as specified for his Old Fashioned cocktail in the novel Live and Let Die!

Tasting Notes

Nose: This bourbon’s attitude is airy and effervescent even at full strength. Orange rind, burned sugars, honey, southern spearmint, touches of floral (orange blossom, honeysuckle) notes and grain (corn and dry rye). Pour and leave in the glass for a good 3-4 minutes. The initial alcohol blast quickly subsides and you can get to business. Palate: Brief notes of honey, bitter orange, caramel and vanilla yield to warming spices (cinnamon, mint, white pepper). Barrel flavors and a bit of resiny grip lead to the finish. Finish: Lingering finish of toasty oak, orange, and caramel sweetness.
